I'd like to share with all of you information about something I have just discovered called 'Bio char' which is charcoal but made from only organic ingredients. It also goes by the name Terra Preta in the Amazon basin which literally means 'black earth'.
You can of course read up on all of this through Wikipedia but what I really wanted to share with you is the positive impact using this resource has both on crops and soil fertility. From what I understand this stuff is very rich in carbon and has considerable effects when mixed into the soil as well as storing much needed carbon back into the soil for 1000's of years!
The main criticisms I see against it are that it can give the soil high ph levels which could have detrimental effects but used responsibly this can be avoided. It's main advantage over regular compost has to be that it will last a lot longer in the soil, trapping that carbon and feeding the plants.
I have added some videos that I think best communicate what it's all about, Enjoy!
Personally I view the word 'sustainability' as a very dynamic one. There seems to be no way of explaining it in it's entirety, rather it's a feeling of living life in low impact manner.
It can loosely be defined with diagrams and graphs but ultimately it's a personal thing.
There are billions of people on this planet and each of them has there own set of desires and needs, some a lot more than others.
To create a sustainable world it would need to cater for every individual and adapt to their needs. It should be a flexible system, allowing people as much freedom as possible and encouraging responsible use of resources, money etc.
Striving towards a sustainable world is as much a physical goal as it is cultural, linked directly to our mentality and outlook in everyday life.
Welcome to the new Dual Horizons website.
We've tried to bring the site up to date a bit whilst making it as minimalistic and clear to navigate as possible.
This marks the moment that the site will become not only a personal blog of our nomadic lifestyle but a platform for my photography, Ecological subjects such as Sustainability through Agriculture, energy sources, low impact living and more. Perhaps most importantly it will become a place to inspire and to inform on these subjects and help people to take action and think or even to just put a smile on their face.
Please feel free to get in touch, I'm open to suggestions on blog topics, links to interesting projects, anything really.
We hope you enjoy.
